Giving students recognition means that a teacher is pointing out when the student is doing really well in class in an area in which they struggle. Many times, I find myself going the intrinsic route by complementing a student verbally infront of the class. I also do give out rewards, usually candy, but PBS points work as well. The students do gravitate towards this type of recognition, but I am finding that this particular group also likes the verbal recogniton infront of the class more and I do not mean global praise. I mean individually on infront of the class. When they are working indpendently, they get a lot of the specific recognition that is based on their abiltites and needs. I do need, however, to start working on being more specific to when they are making gains in the areas of academics they struggle in. I tend to be very general and, based on our reading, this is ineffective.

I really liked big huge labs. It would be a neat way to take pictures from your classroom and turn them into motivational posters. The students always like to see themselves in the classroom. The only difficulty was coming up with a quote. Motivational posters for the teacher's lounge could be created as well.
